My Child, hard to focus and hyperactive
 

I wonder why talking to my child is like putting words to one ear and went out straight from the other, nothing was retained.
He was not responding even when his name was called, more over being asked to do something
Rama never knew that it was his turn. Every time his name was called, he looked surprised and would not know which part he should read.
 
Do you have similar experiences? Is it hard to expect something from your children or students? He/she frequently have a blank look, very moveable or hyperactive and quarrelsome with friends, teachers even with his/her own parents.
 
Be careful not to easily label the child as belligerent, lazy or grueling. He/she might suffer the condition known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD.
 
What is ADHD?
 
ADHD is a dysfunctional condition that includes lack of focus and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity, which means that a person might lack of focus but not hyperactive.
 
Today, there are more less 10% children in the US suffered from ADHD and the number is increasing. This condition is more prevalent in boys rather than girls.
 
What is the cause?
 
Just like autism, there is no specified cause of ADHD. It is unique for every individual. Some caused by profound allergy, lack of dopamine in the brain, undeveloped certain part of the brain, too much certain chemical entities in the body, etc. Nevertheless, this condition is brought since birth and not caused by certain disease or accident.
 
Normally hyperactivity can be seen since childhood because of the higher activity compared to his/her peer, hence the lack of focus is seen when the child starts studying at elementary level. Children under 5 years old tend to have shorter attention span, besides kindergarten activities will allow the children to explore more and learning actively.
 
Lack of focus is also known as lack of concentration, but they are not necessarily the same. Children with ADHD have a wide range of concentration. Inside the class they can hear the noise from outside, the noise from the air conditioning, see the picture on the wall, see the ribbon on the hair of their friend while listening to the teacher, the problem lies on the inability to sort their attention out, they cannot sort which thing is more important, thus they cannot focus their attention on the thing they should.
 
This condition must be present at different part of life, which means if they are lack of focus. It happens whether they are in school or when they are at home. If they are hyperactive, then they will be hyperactive either in school or at their respective home. Those who are lack of focus can be very focus when they are doing things that they like, especially when the object they are facing is bright such as computer or games.
 
Is the condition curable?
 
ADHD is not a disease, therefore it cannot be cured. However, we can help the children to improve. There are several approaches in helping those with ADHD. As a description, there are many people with ADHD success as entrepreneur, athlete, TV star, etc. They succeed because they have enormous energy and extraordinary creativity.
 
What is important first and foremost, the accurate diagnose. A child / person can be diagnosed as ADHD if he/she meets certain criteria. The minimum IQ level of the child, has to be in the average level. Why? Because if the IQ level is lower than average, it might happen that the learning difficulties is caused by the low learning potential rather than lack of focus. Other condition that can prompt the child to have difficulty in focusing is fatigue/tiredness. Today where the children have to join different kind of activities, tiredness can be seen as lack of focus during their study time.
 
In a situation where a child is diagnosed with ADHD, there are some assessment that can be done, such as neurological examination, allergy test and sensory test. Neurological examination needs to be done to see if there is a neurology problem while allergy test is aimed at the diet proper for the child, and the sensory test can be used to determine the appropriate therapy for the child.
 
Intake diet is one of the important factors to improve the focusing ability and minimize the hyperactivity of a child with ADHD. There are many researches that prove the effect of diet on the focusing ability and reducing the hyperactivity.
 
The common therapies for ADHD are sensory integration therapy, occupation therapy, brain gym, rhythmic movement therapy or hypnotherapy, while family counseling is also being done.
 
If those approaches have been implemented and still there is no significant improvement, the proper medication need to be considered. Medication requires routine and general check up by child neurologist.
 
There is a need to work together between the parents and schools which are very important. If it is possible, allow the child to study at the ordinary (non-special) school, but if it is impossible, study at special school with special teachers can be an alternative.
 
With proper approach we can help children with ADHD to improve their life quality and deal with their limitation. Without proper approach, the description of research finding is alarming, since almost 80% of prisoners in the US are people with ADHD. They did the crimes because of their impulsivity and feeling of offended for negative label given to them.
 
ADHD features:
 
Inattention
  • Careless or sloppy in doing the task
  • Difficulty in focusing
  • Inattentive when called or converse
  • Difficulty in following the instruction or unfinished homework/school assignments
  • Difficulty in organizing school assignment and homework
  • Refuse to work on task that requires full attention such as homework
  • Frequently losing things
  • Easily distracted by external stimuli
  • Forgetful

Hyperactivity / Impulsive

  • Frequently fidgeting
  • Move around the classroom, hard to sit still
  • Run/climb/move excessively
  • Difficult in activity which requires immobility such as reading
  • Continuously active, as if untiring machine
  • Talkative
  • Tend to answer before the question is finished
  • Difficult to wait / queue
  • Tend to interrupt conversation of hassle others

The achievement of big Japanese companies such as Honda and Matsushita compelled some experts to do some research on the the factors behind those acheivements. Aside from working attitude and strong organization management, it was discovered that the kwy success of Japanese big companies is their knowledge managemen system. Knowledge, either at individual level or group (organizational) level are manage in such a way that it creates new knowledge that will support the innovation process and manifested in the form of products or services.
 
Generally, knowledge management is define as a systematic management process, which enables the creation, identification, classification, distribution and aplication of new products.
 
Unlike other efficiency procedure concepts, knowledge management focuses on winning the competition based on excellent and better knowledge compared to other competitors. Thus, the main issue in knowledge management is competitiveness. Competitiveness is acquired through managing our knowledge at hand effectively and efficiently. (Onno W. Purbo).
 
There are 2 kinds of knowledge manage in knowledge management :

a. Tacit knowledge : knowledge that is hard to articulate but can be transferred and comunicated on. Tacit knowledge are:

  • Not easily visible and expressible
  • Highly personal and hard to formalize
  • Difficult to communicate/share to others
  • Subjective insights, intuition, hunches
  • Deeply rooted in an individual actions and experience, ideals, values, emotions
  • Increases proportionally with the individual’s commitment to learning

b. Explicit knowledge : knowledge that is real and easy to articulate and taught to others. It is:

  • Easily visible and expressible and articulated
  • Formal and systematically organized information
  • Can be processed by computers, transmitted electronically, stored in databases
  • Easy to communicate/share to others
  • Can be in a form of books, manuals or an audio visual

The question is, “is it possible to convert or transfer the knowledge so that it will create product or service innovation and improve the continuity of a company?”

My experience as partner in dPi Consulting starts in 2003. There are five if us as partners. I know my partners since 2000, but frankly speaking we are not too close. For sure we have the integrity as our similar value. Although I did not them very well, I am quite sure that we can work together because our INTEGRITY value.
 
At that time, I value Pak Edi is a very formal person who is very serious, not easy to be approached. Lina is so quiet and has “poker face”. She does not want to be in a limelight and prefers to have one on one consultation. Having three kids, she is so “motherly” for me. Keny is very good in detail. Often she asks me many “bothering question”. Ita is a very calm and accommodating person. She helps me a lot. People must be very relax and comfortable dealing with her. She is a good listener and sometimes telling jokes. Myself, likes to chat and restless. I like to be recognized and like to have many activities.
 
These differences often make friction among us. For me, Pa Edi and Keny are too detail. Lina cannot help me doing the presentation or to go out of office. Ita is “too good” to people, sometimes make me “gemes”.
 
In early 2003, we met our “old friend” Mr. Khoo Oon Theam from OTI Consulting – Singapore, and he introduced DiSC to dPi. Personally, I learned DiSC from Pa Edi, Keny and Ita who are already very familiar with DiSC. Me and Lina, have a “superficial” knowledge about it. As a part of our dealership, OTi consulting certified us through “DiSC Certidification Training” in September 2003.
 
After having deep understanding about DiSC, our dPi team becomes more solid. Not only based on the integrity value, but also because we value each other. We aware and accept our differences and modify our behavior to the need of others.
 
DiSC is NOT just a theory. It can be APPLIED in our social and work life. For example, dPi has training program as one of our services. With my profile “Di – inspirational profile” I prefer to be given opportunity to create module and conduct the training. Ita with …. Profile will help me in creating module and games. In conducting training, Pa Edi with his “DC – creative profile” will back me up in the theory. Usually, I take role in games, role play, and giving de brief, Ita help me in adding detail of the brefing, and Pa Edi will complete it with the theory.
 
How about Keny and Lina?? With her “IC – Appraisar Profile”, Keny is good in consultancy project. Meanwhile Lina with her CS profile prefer to be given one on one consultation rather than giving training or presentation. Usually, if Lina and I have to present something, I did the presentation, and Lina help me with Question and Answer. Instead of focus on the limitation, we utilize our strengths and fill in the gap.
 
So, how about make your teamwork as solid as our team? Know your DiSC style, Know others’ DiSC Style : Accept, Aware and Adapt!!

The management of Aviaterra uses our assessment service to select and recruit their students. dPi Consulting uses FINGERPRINT TEST as one of the tools and is integrated with other psychometric tools to identify the talents of the students. Specifically, FINGERPRINT TEST helps us to identify whether students have inborn talent to be a PILOT.
The output will show whether the students has low potential, medium
potential or high potential to be a PILOT. This result will help the school management to use different approach to each student.

CIMB Niaga has a big concern to their employees who enter pension age (more than 53 years old). In 2013 CIMB Niaga appointed dPi Consulting to conduct and manage the pra pension training program. This is a couple program, thus every employee who attends this program is encouraged to bring his/her spouse. Up to now, dPi Consulting has been conducting 9 batches, and each batch has 20 – 30 participants.
 
The program starts with psychological and health talk, and then is continued with financial planning and entrepreneurship. AFTER THE PROGRAM, they are invited to join the free consultation and entrepreneurship course, with certain terms and condition.
